Data-Saving Settings on Popular Apps You Should Apply

We love data, don’t we? The invisible glue that connects us to the internet while draining the life out of our wallets as well. Love or hate it, data has become as important as the food we eat. That is why we must learn to manage it efficiently. Many apps we use on our devices contain data-saving settings to help you manage data. The problem is, we just don’t know where to look.

In a previous article, we covered smart ways to save big on mobile data; in this article, we have detailed out data-saving settings on popular apps that you should apply right away if you are looking to browse more data efficiently:

how to save mobile data

Facebook

Video autoplay consumes the most data on Facebook. You can turn-off autoplay by doing the following:

  1. Tap Menu (the three lines buttons) in the top right.
  2. Scroll down and tap Settings & Privacy > Settings.
  3. Scroll down and tap Media and Contacts (for iPhones users, you would select Videos and Photos before you proceed)
  4. Tap Autoplay.
  5. Select Never Autoplay Videos.

You can control how fast Facebook pictures loads by adjusting how many photos you want to see. To do this:

  1. Tap Settings & Privacy at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Edit next to Data Usage.
  4. Choose Less or Normal or More
  5. Click Save.

Instagram

By default, Instagram preloads videos so they start faster whenever possible. To use less data on Instagram:

  1. Go to your profile and tap the Menu button (the three-line icon)
  2. Tap Settings below the Menu page.
  3. Tap Account > Cellular Data Use.
  4. Next to Use Less Data (iPhone) or Data Saver (Android), toggle on.

WhatsApp

Videos sent to you on WhatsApp can download automatically even when you don’t want to play it? To disable video autoplay on WhatsApp:

  1. Tap the three vertical dots on the top right > Settings.
  2. Now tap Chat settings > Media auto-download. (You’ll see three options: When using cellular data, When connected on Wi-Fi and When roaming)
  3. Tap each one and disable auto-downloads by unchecking all three options – Images, Audio, and Video.

For iPhone users:

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap the Settings button at the bottom-right, and tap on Data and Storage Usage.
  2. In this menu, you will see the Media Auto-Download option on the top.
  3. For Photos, Audio, Videos, and Documents, select the Never option.

Twitter

Like Facebook, Twitter also has an autoplay feature embedded in the app. You can disable this by following these steps:

YouTube

  1. Tap on your profile icon on the option right corner
  2. Select Settings
  3. Click on General
  4. Turn on Limit Mobile Data Usage

Google PlayStore

Apps auto-updates over mobile data are the main data drainer when it comes to PlayStore. You can choose to auto-update only over Wi-Fi or never auto-update. To disable mobile data auto-updates, do the following:

  1. Open PlayStore
  2. Click on Menu > Settings
  3. Click on Auto-update Apps
  4. Select Auto-update Apps over Wi-Fi Only (or you can choose Do Not Auto-Update Apps)

iPhone AppStore

Similar to PlayStore, apps on iPhone would auto-update by default unless you disable this feature or set it to Wi-Fi only. To do this:

  1. Go to Settings on your iPhone
  2. Click on iTunes and App Store
  3. Turn off the apps you do not want to update
  4. Turn off auto-update over mobile data below the menu

Manage your Sync Settings

While this is not an app, it is important to know that Google on Andriod and Apple on iPhone regularly sync with your phone data such as videos and pictures automatically. This is to provide backing and retrieval of data in case you lost your device, but it equally consumes a lot of data.

To manage your sync settings on Andriod:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Click on Account Option
  3. Click on the App whose sync settings you want to adjust
  4. Turn off sync on apps you don’t need synchronizing

For iPhone users:

  1. Open iTunes
  2. Connect your device to a computer
  3. Select your connected device from the Top device button
  4. Go to Options in Summary Sections
  5. Disable Automatic sync when this iPhone is connected
  6. Close iTunes for change to take effect

Hopefully, these details save you more data for efficient browsing. Don’t forget that these settings apply to all mobile networks: MTN, Airtel, 9mobile, and Glo. If you are using a Wi-Fi connection such as Smile, you might need to go through the Wi-Fi settings to see how to manage data or reach out to Smile support.

Celebrating Workers’ Day in the Lockdown

. . .holiday that doesn’t feel like a holiday

The 1st of May of every year is officially recognized as a holiday for government workers and employees of certain private companies whose management granted the day off to celebrate Worker’s Day.

The same applies to Nigeria where workers greatly appreciate the 24-hours break they get from work, especially when it comes in the middle of the week or on a Friday.

Established on May 1st, 1890 after the International Congress of Socialist Parties in Europe on July 14th, 1889 proclaimed the first of every May as “Workers Day of International Unity and Solidarity”, the Worker’s day holiday has come a long way with a long history attached.

However, this year’s Worker’s day comes to us with no excitement as workers simply aren’t in the holiday mood.

With the recent COVID-19 outbreak that has forced governments to temporarily shut down economies, increase spendings on health and security, and enforced the ‘Stay At Home’ rule, workers are feeling less enthusiastic to spend one more day on holiday. Everyone wants to return to work as soon as possible, making the famous May Day look like something we would rather scrap off the calenders.

Health workers during the lockdown

Those in the frontline of our battle against the pandemic might have a different feeling. Health workers, security personals and those offering essential services might not get the day off today as their services are of extreme importance to everyone at this period. They are the ones truly in need of 2020’s May Day.

Twitter and Facebook have been exploding with compliments and appreciation of workers in these lines and it is only necessary we show more of these appreciations. We simply cannot do without our health workers and other essential service providers at this moment.

So here we are, celebrating a holiday that doesn’t feel like a holiday. Our only hope is to swiftly overcome the disease that has paralyzed the world this long so that when next we celebrate May Day, everyone can look back to 2020 and appreciate the importance of man’s service to man.

As part of our appreciation of workers, VTpass remains committed to providing top-notch services as regards stress-free, convenient bills payment, so you can focus on doing things that really matter to you.

5 Factors To Consider Before Quitting A Job

The grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

While many would agree that the biggest reason for staying at a job is the financial incentive earned, others would disagree and throw in reasons like one’s passion, the pursuit of a new challenge, opportunities to learn, etc.

Nevertheless, most people would discover that money is still one of the biggest factors that determine the decision when a better job offer comes along.

It is not unreasonable to be money-driven however, there are other factors to consider and questions to ask before making a decision, including;

What do I want for my job, career, and life?

Most people make a huge mistake while quitting their job thinking they’ll just update their resume and start networking without being thoughtful about what their wants and how to get there.

For instance, studying to become a medical doctor maybe interesting but it will not help you achieve the flexible schedule you want. So also, if you’d like to make a career change, think about all the necessary steps. They may include more school, lower pay, or working your way up from the bottom–again.

What can you get from your current job?

If you love your current job and only have a problem with the payment, you may consider asking for a justifiable raise from your boss.

However, if your employer is unable to review your salary, you can negotiate for other incentives like flexible working hours, etc.

Also, outline your job description and compare it with the industry pay-scale to see if your current pay matches.

Do I have enough saved to cover nine to 12 months of expenses?

Financial planner, Susan Hirshman says a few years ago she told people to save enough for six months of expenses. Now she tells people they need nine to 12 months.

Hirshman suggests mapping out fixed expenses like credit cards, transportation, and food, as well as factoring in the “what if” costs.

Is the Time right?

The best factor to consider before quitting a job is the timing.

Consider if you have commitments that you have to fulfill. Are you’re in the middle of a busy season or working on a big project? You may want to honor those commitments so that your team isn’t left behind and you’re able to leave on good terms.

Also, it might be smart to wait a little longer if you’d like to receive your quarterly bonus, holiday vacation, and other bonuses.

Do I have the support of my family and friends?

Not many consider this factor but quitting your job affects the people in your life, so it’s important that you have an honest conversation with your family first. Your spouse or children may need to help or at least participate in some of your cost-cutting plans and need to be involved from the beginning.

Having a support system of friends or close colleagues who can help keep you on track while looking for a new job would be in your best interest.

In Summary;

Switching or quitting a job may sound fancy and look a lot more interesting than it actually is, which is why it is advisable to consider all factors before making a decision. If you are only interested in looking for simple ways to earn extra income, be sure to add VTpass partnership programs to your checklist.

Everything You Need to Know About SmileVoice Calls and Airtime

In a previous article where we covered everything about Smile 4G data, we promised we would do the same for SmileVoice calls and airtime. The thing is, Smile is known for data services, but not everyone knows you can equally use Smile for voice calls just like you do with local airtime networks in Nigeria.

You can use your Smile 4G data bundle for voice calls and SMS to anyone, anywhere in the world from your mobile phone using SmileVoice App or a Smile SIM inserted into a compatible voLTE phone.

SmileVoice service assigns you a +234-70- mobile number which you can call and receive calls with. When traveling abroad, you don’t need to roam the line as it can be used over any local WiFi but international charges would apply. However, Smile-to-Smile calls are absolutely free no matter where you are. That’s way cool!
